25 September 2009

Macra na Feirme Irelands oldest farming and rural youth organisation celebrated its 65th birthday at a reception at the Macra Marquee at the 78th National Ploughing championships. Current Macra na Feirme National President Michael Gowing was joined by past Macra presidents to toast Macra’s 65 years.

Mr Gowing said Macra is as relevant today as it was in its inception in 1944, when Stephen Cullinan and his peers founded this great organisation, Macra has changed in many ways over the years but today we still represent a vibrant and active youth both on and off the farm, we have adapted to suit our members needs along with continuing to represent our young farmers.

Macra na Feirme had a great three days at the ploughing championships, meeting and signing up potential new members and discussing young farmer issues, meeting politicians for pre-budget lobbying, the 11th FBD Young Farmer of the Year William Keane was also on hand to meet people, a Pensions awareness competition to win a lap top run in conjunction with the Pensions Board. Carbery Macra were also in attendance to promote the Macra na Feirme Rally kindly sponsored by Dubliner Irish Cheese which will take place in Westlodge Hotel in Bantry in October.

It was fitting for Macra na Feirme to celebrated its 65th birthday at the ploughing in Athy as Athy was the location for Macra’s first national office, the great and good of the Irish Agri industry were on hand to celebrate Ireland oldest farming organisation, which has been producing some of Irelands finest leaders since its inception in 1944 celebrate its birthday.
