Athboy win National Debating Competition
14 May 2007
After a closely-fought war of words at this year's final of the Macra na Feirme / National Forum On Europe Debating Competition, the Athboy team from Co. Meath were declared the 2007 champions with their proposition of the motion that 'Fifty years on, the European Union should continue to enlarge'.
The competition took place at the annual Macra AGM in Drogheda last weekend.
The team of Robert Lucas, Tom Leavy, Eamon Cassells and Martha Finnegan have now won four places on the Macra prizewinners' trip to Riga later this year as part of their prize.
Macra president Catherine Buckley paid tribute to the Athboy team and their opponents from Clonakilty, Carbery on their eloquent oratory skills and congratulated Robert Lucas who was awarded 'Best Speaker' on the night.
