Macra na Feirme national president Colm Markey said that the failure of the Minister for Agriculture to fully deliver the Farm Waste Management Scheme announced by her last August is a blow for young farmers.

Mr. Markey said he understands that contrary to media reports the new scheme will not include any young farmer top-ups in the non-disadvantaged areas and only 5% top-ups in counties Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan. A 10 % top-up will apply in the other disadvantaged areas.

'I am very disappointed that the Minister has failed to deliver on the top-ups for young farmers in non-disadvantaged areas, he said.

Mr. Markey said the Minister had created an expectation by making her announcement last summer and that young farmers would be very disappointed with the outcome.
