Macra’s Bord Bia Stockjudging Winners Announced

The national finals of Macra na Feirme’s Bord Bia Beef and Sheep Stockjudging competition took place at the Macra na Feirme Annual Conference last weekend.

Prizes were awarded in three separate categories: Senior Beef Stockjudging, Under 23 Beef Stockjudging and Senior Sheep Stockjudging.

Donal O’Leary from Kilmeen Macra, Carbery won first prize for Sheep Stockjudging.

Patrick O’Connor from Berrings Macra, Muskerry won the Senior Beef Stockjudging.

Top prize in the Under 23 category of Beef stockjudging went to Tom Dunne from East Laois Macra in Laois.

Macra na Feirme National President, Alan Jagoe, congratulated the winners of the stockjudging competitions and said, “The advantages of these competitions is that they help young farmers become skilled at assessing livestock, thus preparing them for the actual job of buying and selling animals. Macra would like to thank sponsors, Bord Bia, for their continued support of Macra and its young farmers.”

Joe Burke represented sponsors Bord Bia at the event. He commented that there has been tremendous interest in the competition this year. “It’s an exciting time for young livestock producers. Cattle prices are up to 20% higher than this time last year and it has never as important to be able to select the best performing animals.”

First place winners in each category have now won themselves a place on the Macra na Feirme prize-winners trip abroad next year.
