Sporting Events 
Macra has a busy calendar of sports events to keep members active all year round.  While many clubs organise their own weekly sports activities, participation in the national sports competition is also open to all members. This programme includes volleyball, indoor soccer, basketball, bowling and Gaelic football.

Callan Macra na Feirme National Volleyball Champions 

 

 
Macra na Feirme National Volleyball competition took place this past weekend in St Kieran’s College in Kilkenny.   Last year Callan Macra from county Kilkenny lost out to Whitechurch Macra club from Seandun in the final, this year, however, they came out fighting and have won the national title. 
Callan beat off stiff competition from Terelton, Macra from the Muskerry region of Cork last weekend to win the national final of Macra na Feirme’s annual volleyball competition. The competition saw 15 Macra teams from around the county travel to Kilkenny to compete for the National title.
 
The Callan team consisted of Katleen O'Keefe, Denis Nolan, PJ O'Keefe, Colm Lyons, Shane O'Keefe and John Hayle, front row Brid Costello, Macra na Feirme National President Catherine Buckley and Aisling Murphy.
 

 

NDC Basketball Titles Go West to South Sligo and Galway 

The NDC Basketball titles have both gone to clubs from the west this year; in 2009 both titles went to Cork. Moylough club from Galway were winners in this year’s Macra Men's Basketball Final while the South Sligo club from Sligo took the top prize in the Women's Competition.

Moylough defeated Terelton from the Muskerry region of Cork by a score of 11 to 8, while the ladies from South Sligo also beat the Terelton women with a final score of 12 points to 7. Thirty two teams from around the country took part in the day-long event held at the University of Limerick.
 
Speaking at the event, Macra na Feirme, National President, Michael Gowing, who presented the trophies and medals on the day, congratulated all the participating teams on the dedication and hard work that has gone into preparing for the competition. Basketball is a great team sport and as Macra encourages team work along with leadership, sports are a great way to promote both.  Mr Gowing also thanked sponsors The National Dairy Council for their support and reminded all competitors to visit the Health and Wellbeing section of the Macra.ie website for further information on Macra’s sporting events and also on healthy recipes and on events the NDC are running across the country.

Callan Macra Win the National Dairy Council National Bowling Final  

The national Finals of the NDC national bowling competition took place this past weekend with the team from Callan in Kilkenny winning the title.

The Callan team from Kilkenny consisted of Brid Costello, Ray Daniels, Aisling Murphy, Bryan Daniels Kathleen O'Keeffe and Ollie Kirwan.
 
In second place was the Camross team from county Laois. The Camross team was made up of Colin Delaney, Olga Parkinson, Niall Cuddy, Karen Rice, Sean Gilmore and Alyse Rusecke.
 
20 teams from across the country took part in the National finals of the competition, which was held in the Dome in Carlow.
 

 

Midway and Camross are National Dairy Council Indoor Soccer Champions 

The national finals of the Ladies' and Men'sIndoor Soccer competitions were held on Sunday the 17th of January in Gormanstown College, Co. Meath. This year's competition saw thirty-nine teams battle it out for the coveted national titles.

In the women’s final, Midway Macra from Co Sligo including Amy McClean, Imelda McNulty, Christina Lynn, Jacqueline Mulligan and Hazel McCafferty clinched first place in the ladies competition over Carrigaline Macra from the Seandun region of Cork. 
 
In the men's final, Camross Macra from county Laois whose team consisted of Sean Gilmore, Niall Cuddy, Joe Phelan, Colin Blaney, James Palmer, Joe Delaney, Ray Cuddy and Tadhg Doran emerged victorious over the new club from South Leitrim Macra in Co. Leitrim.  
 
Macra president Michael Gowing presented the medals at the event and congratulated the winning teams on their achievement. Mr Gowing said after the event, ‘competitions like indoor soccer are a great form of exercise for young people along with being great fun, and sports are a great hobby, and a great way of meeting people, indoor soccer is as popular as ever, as seen by the many competitors’ who battled it out for the coveted titles today.
 

   

Callan and Kilmeen Take Top Honours in the NDC GAA 7-a-side Competition 

 

 
    
 
 
This year’s final of the Macra na Feirme National Dairy Council 7-a-side Gaelic football competition, took place in the Bantry Blues sports ground on n Sunday October 25th on the final day of the Macra na Feirme national Conference. The team from Kilmeen in Cork narrowly defeated the team from Ardcath in Co. Meath to take the Men’s NDC Macra na Feirme GAA-7-a-side title. The ladies title was won by Callan Macra from Kilkenny.
 
 
Competitors from Macra clubs all over the country battled it out for the title and a place on the Macra prize-winners trip later this year.
 
Macra na Feirme, National President, Michael Gowing, has congratulated all Macra members who took part in the competition, he also highlighted the importance of members health and wellbeing which Macra is keenly aware of its for this reason Macra and the NDC teamed up to provide Health and Wellbeing on our website www.macra.ie
